HBI Member International Opportunities

Research Visits

Investigators who are full members of the HBI are eligible to apply for research visits with institutions who are current or developing international partners. Visits may involve an HBI member travelling to a partner institution, or an investigator from a partner institution visiting the HBI. In both cases, research visits must advance a defined, collaborative research initiative.

Apply
Applications may be submitted at any time of the year, but must be received a minimum of four months prior to the proposed dates of travel. The RHISE program will fund research visits up to one week in duration. Expenses beyond that time frame will normally be the responsibility of the individual researcher, unless an extension is justified and approved.

Questions and completed application forms, including all attachments, should be submitted by email to the HBI Project Manager at brandi.chuchman@ucalgary.ca.

New Partnerships

International partnerships are developed selectively to achieve the goals of the HBI International Strategy and responsibly manage the RHISE program resources. The criteria for new prospective partnerships includes:

  • Research programs align with significant portions of the HBI’s NeuroDiscovery Framework
  • Research programs demonstrate a translational continuum
  • Institution is a producer and/or user of neurotechnologies of interest to the HBI
  • Evidence of success in knowledge translation activities
  • Institutional support available for international collaborations
  • High calibre of the institution’s neuroscience education program
  • Institution’s trainees interested in international placements

HBI members who would like to recommend a new international partnership are encouraged to discuss their ideas with their NeuroTeam Leader or a member of the HBI Strategic Research and Innovation Committee (SRIC). If supportive, a NeuroTeam Leader/SRIC member may complete the following application form. Proposals may include an assessment visit 3-10 days in duration to fully evaluate the suitability of a new partner institution, based on the criteria above.

Apply
Applications may be submitted at any time of the year, but must be received a minimum of four months prior to the proposed visit and/or start of activities with the new partner.

Questions and completed application forms, including all attachments, should be submitted by email to the HBI Project Manager at brandi.chuchman@ucalgary.ca.

Tailored Initiatives

In addition to research visits and assessment visits, the HBI International Strategy supports other tailored initiatives with current and developing international partners. Formal exchange programs are in place for trainees from the HBI and partner institutions – see Trainee Exchanges for details on these programs. Additional activities may include scientific symposia, webinars, trainee delegate visits and other initiatives tailored to advancing specific research or educational goals with a partner.

HBI members and trainees are encouraged to bring their ideas for tailored initiatives with current and developing international partners to their NeuroTeam Leader or a member of the HBI Strategic Research and Innovation Committee (SRIC). Proposals will be discussed by the SRIC committee. All activities will be approved by the HBI Executive Committee before proceeding.
