Thank you for your interest in the Hotchkiss Brain Institute.

The Hotchkiss Brain Institute brings together more than 300 scientists who investigate basic, population health and clinical sciences.  By bringing together these scientists, it is the aim of the HBI to have a collective expertise in the field of neurosciences, increased collaboration and elevated synergism in our research efforts. , HBI’s members represent nine faculties across the University of Calgary, including: the Cumming School of Medicine, faculties of Arts, Kinesiology, Nursing, Science, Social Work, Veterinary Medicine, the Schulich School of Engineering, and the Werklund School of Education. The HBI also leads the campus-wide University of Calgary Brain and Mental Health research strategy, bringing together a total of 417 researchers in transdisciplinary teams to advance neurological discoveries, innovations, and education. HBI’s researchers are supported by a team of over 1,800 laboratory and professional staff – plus approximately 500 students and trainee scholars – who are actively engaged in brain and mental health research and education.

While the HBI provides resources – such as space, core facilities, and seed funding – the activities of our members, working together to advance our research and education mission, are the true ‘engine' of the Institute. HBI members secure tens of millions of dollars in competitive external funding each year; they create new collaborative, team-based projects; and they drive research discovery and translation efforts within the Institute. Membership in the HBI (new and continuing) is approved by the HBI Executive Committee and is subject to periodic review.
