Dr. David Hogan

My primary research interest would be in the clinical aspects of aging. Since my arrival in Calgary in 1990 I've been active in the area of cognitive impairment/dementia (e.g., Alzheimer's disease). I've served as Medical Director of the Cognitive Assessment Clinic since the early 1990s. This clinic had functioned as an important home for dementia-related research and educational activities. I have participated in a number of interventional and observational studies dealing with cognitive impairment/dementia. These have been local, national, and international in scope. These studies include the landmark Canadian Study of Health and Aging, which as its primary objective examined the incidence and prevalence of dementia among older Canadians. Growing out of my clinical and research interests in cognition, I've been actively involved in developing clinical practice guidelines for the assessment and management of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. The recently funded Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging will afford researchers in Calgary access to a unique infrastructure to study biological, physiological, clinical, social predictors of healthy aging. Over the years I've been very interested in population therapeutics as it relates to dementia and other aspects of aging. Recently with colleagues such as Dr. Colleen Maxwell, Dr. Eric Smith and Dr. Marc Poulin I've been examining the intriguing interface between cerebrovascular physiology and disease, cognition, and aging. From an educational standpoint I've taken a leadership role in developing a RCPSC-approved training program in geriatric medicine as well as being an active undergraduate, postgraduate clinical, graduate sciences, and continuing professional development (CPD) educator.
